Before you work in a restaurant that serves alcohol, or in a bar or lounge, you need to undertake training on rules and regulations, the legal implications, and the way to handle patrons. A Responsible Service of Alcohol, or RSA course online is the perfect method of doing this. There may be a similar course offered at your local community college, but if you can do it at home, it gives you the opportunity to work at your own pace.

First of all you have to register for your RSA course online. It’s likely a good idea too, if before you take the course, and if you haven’t done any bartending at all, to go to a lounge and observe the professionals. Don’t order an alcoholic drink for yourself, but rather keep your observation powers sharp by focussing completely and with a clear mind what she or he is doing. References to various scenarios in the course may make more sense if you’ve seen them in action beforehand. Do not be afraid to sit right near where the bartender is working and see if you can strike up a conversation, if they have the time to chat with you.  You may ask if you can meet at a mutually convenient time to ask questions about their career or if any job shadowing days are open.

Before you start your RSA course online, tell all your friends and family that you will need to concentrate for the three or four hours that will be needed. You do not want interruptions. Do it on a day off from work and any other activities so you do not have to be watching the clock and worrying about rushing out the door at a predetermined deadline. Make sure you have plenty of food and beverages ready to serve so you aren’t rummaging in the refrigerator or heating a slice of pizza in the microwave while you are doing the course as any extra activities may cause you to lose your focus and disrupt the flow of information that you are receiving.

Typically, you can expect to cover details about house policies, preventing intoxication, possible fines that staff and the premises can incur, and the effects of alcohol in your RSA course online. You will learn all about handling difficult customers, and this is a very important part of your education. Patrons respond differently when you determine that they are intoxicated and that you have to refuse them any further service. Some are grateful, but others become belligerent.

The RSA course online may be quick and convenient, but it is the start of a great career.  Plan you time to study accordingly to get the most out of your course.
